Wade Park Facility - Spinal Cord Injury Unit
One of the many centers of excellence for the Department of Veterans Affairs – Louis Stokes Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, is its Spinal Cord Injury Unit. CBLH Design led this renovation project which converted an entire floor of the bed tower from an outdated ward style unit into a patient focused state-of-the art medical care unit. The unit's renovation provides semi-private rooms for two patients and private rooms for isolation situations. Each room is also equipped with a toilet shower room that is capable of allowing a large wheelchair to enter and move around. The showers were designed to allow staff to easily bathe patients.

Other amenities of the Spinal Cord Injury Unit include a new lobby that is unique to this floor aiding in wayfinding of visitors, patients and staff. A common dining and recreation room was created to encourage patients to gather for social activities. Physical therapy and occupational therapy suites were created for physicians and nursing staff to work with the patients on the floor rather than transporting them to another department for daily workouts. Finally, an office suite was designed that houses offices for social workers and medical staff, exam rooms, and a cystostopic room for procedures. This unit also provides outpatient services for veterans of Northeast Ohio.
