MetroHealth Medical Center
Skilled Nursing West
Cleveland, Ohio
The vision behind the design: To create a new, comprehensive care facility for the elderly including an Alzheimer's unit which will impart a "home-like" environment. CBLH provided architectural design services for the new structure which is located on the urban MetroHealth Medical Center Campus in Cleveland, Ohio, and replaced an existing, off-site building which no longer met the needs of the current residents.

The new building consists of a 90,000 square foot, single floor, state-of-the-art, 150-bed Skilled Nursing Facility, utilizing a "cluster cottage" design concept. The residential scale of the building and exterior design relate to the surrounding neighborhood of houses and small shops.
Each cluster is composed of two 15-bed patient wings which are served from a central control point. The control point includes a nurse station, family room, bathing facilities and an activity area. Informal "living rooms" are placed throughout the building providing informal gathering places for residents outside of their rooms.
